Dia 13o: La panaderia y un paseo por Pontevedra

Hoy nosotros fuimos a la Panadería Acuña en Pontevedra con nuestros hermanos españoles. Vimos como las personas allí preparaban y cocinaban el pan. Después nosotros tratamos de cocinar pan usando la masa. Las personas allí nos dieron napolitanas y eran muy deliciosas. Al salir todos teníamos sed porque las napolitanas eran muy ricas y por eso compramos agua con nuestras monedas, que son muy pesadas. Entonces, anduvimos por el centro de Pontevedra donde estaba la iglesia que se llama La Peregrina. Nosotros formamos grupos de tres para ir de compras por dos horas. Luego cuando volvimos al centro, sacamos una foto del grupo y caminamos al restaurante para almorzar. Comimos espaguetis con salsa de carne y luego milanesa de pollo con patatas fritas. Me gustó este día mucho porque la panadería fue muy interestante y olía muy bien. El tiempo en los grupos y el almuerzo fue muy divertido también. -Rachel y los otros alumnos de NA

Today we went to the Acuña Bakery in Pontevedra with our host siblings. We watched while people there prepared and cooked the bread. Afterwards, we tried to cook bread using dough. The people there gave us pastries with chocolate that were very delicious. When we left everyone was thirsty because the pastries were very rich and so we bought water with our coins, which are very heavy. Then we walked to the center of Pontevedra where there is a church called La Peregrina. We formed groups of three to go shopping for two hours. Then when we all returned to the center, we took a photo of the group and walked to the restaurant to eat. We ate spaghetti with meat sauce and then chicken milanese with french fries. I liked this day very much because the bakery was very interesting and smelled very good. The time in the groups and at lunch were very fun also. -Rachel and the other NA students

Dia 12o: Las termas de Ourense

Hoy fue muy divertido.  Yo me llevante, y fui a la escuela.  Nosotros (nuestro grupo) fuimos a las Termas de Ourense.  Yo nade mucho, y me diverti.  Despues nosotros fuimos a un restaurante, y yo comi paella con pollo.  La paella con pollo estaba deliciosa.  Despues fuimos a la escuela, y luego yo fui a mi casa.  Yo descanse porque yo estaba cansado.  Yo comi la cena, y le dije a mi madre espanola," Gracias a la cocinera!  La comida era excelente!"  Despues yo fui a mi dormitorio, y me dormi. -Greg, y el resto del grupo de NA

Today was very fun.  I woke up, and went to school.  We (our group) went to the Termas de Ourense.  I swam a lot, and had fun.  After we went to a restaurant, and I ate paella with chicken.  The paella with chicken was delicious.  Afterwards we went to the school, and then I went to my house.  I rested because I was tired.  I ate dinner and told my mother, "Thanks to the chef!  The food was excellent!"  Then I went to my bedroom and slept. -Greg, and the rest of the NA group

Dia 10o: Portugal!

Disfrutamos de un dia libre hoy. Aqui, uno de los estudiantes comparte lo que hizo durante el dia. Hoy fui a Portugal con mi familia Española. Yo lleve mi pasaporte, pero nunca lo necesite porque no había control de frontera y simplemente cruzamos un puente para entrar en Portugal. Mis padres españoles me habían dicho (en Español) que no necesitaba el pasaporte para viajar dentro de Europa. En Portugal fuimos a una ciudad antigua pero que aun está poblada. La ciudad fue construida dentro de una enorme muralla de piedra con muchos cañones en empotrados. Habían muchísimas tiendas en la ciudad para que la gente comprar recuerdos y otras cosas. Mi familia española y yo almorzamos en la ciudad en Portugal y fuimos de compras en un mercado enorme que tenía muchísimas cosa. Habían muchas tiendas en el mercado, pero la mayoría de las tiendas tenían las mismas cosas. Encontré unos zapatos nuevos que eran muy chulos por solo 10 euros. Después de marcharnos del mercado nosotros fuimos a un café-bar para merendar. Luego volvimos a España. Fue un día muy interesante. -Bill Ulrich

The students had a free day today. Here, one of the students recounts what he did with his day. Today I went to Portugal with my host family. I brought my passport, but I never needed to use it because there was no border control and we simply drove on a bridge over to Portugal. My host parents had told me (in Spanish) that you did not need a passport to travel within Europe. In Portugal we went to a old, but working city. The city was created within huge stone walls with many spots for a lot of cannons. There were a lot of stores in the city for people to buy souvenirs and other things. My family and I had lunch in the city and the food was very similar to the food in Spain. Later we visited another city in Portugal and went shopping in a huge market that had almost everything. There were many stores in the market, but many of the stores had the same stuff. I found some new shoes that were really nice for only 10 Euros. After we left the market we went to a café and had a snack. Later we left and went back to Spain. It was a very interesting day. -Bill Ulrich

Dia 9o: Vigo: El Corte Ingles

Hoy es viernes, y nosotros fuimos en una excursión a El Corte Ingles, un centro comercial. Primero, nosotros montamos en tren a Vigo, donde estaba ubicado el centro comercial. Cuando nosotros llegamos al centro comercial, nosotros fuimos directamente al supermercado para un juego de pistas. En el supermercado, nosotros tuvimos que encontrar aceitunas, diferentes tipos de pescado, el precio de jamón de bellota, crema de cacahuete, comida de bebes, y leche, solo para nombrar algunas cosas. Después nos dieron tiempo libre para explorar el centro comercial por nuestra propia cuenta. El centro comercial era muy diferente de los centro comerciales que existen en los EEUU… todo el edificio era una tienda individual. En el centro comercial había de todo, equipo de sport, gafas del sol, videojuegos, libros, taquilla de billetes, agencia de viajes, y mucho más. Cuando el tiempo termino, nosotros nos bajamos a la estación de tren y montamos el tren a Pontevedra. Este día fue ambos muy divertido e interesante. -Wes Christmann y el resto del grupo de NA

Today is Friday, and we started our day on a excursion to El Corte Ingles,a Spanish mall. The excursion started with a train ride to Vigo, where the mall was. When we got to the mall, we went straight down to the supermarket, where we would have a scavenger hunt. In the supermarket, we needed to find olives, different types of fish, the cost of various cooked hams, peanut butter, baby food, and milk, just to name a few. Afterwards, we were given time to explore the shopping center on our own. The mall was a lot different than the ones in the US... the entire building complex was one store. In the mall there was everything, including clothes, sports equipment, sun glasses, videogames, books, ticket sales, travel agency, and much more. When our time ended, we walked to the train station and rode back to Pontevedra. The trip was both a lot of fun and very interesting. -Wes Christmann and the rest of the NA group

Dia 8o: Montar a caballo

Hoy, los estudiantes disfrutaban un dia libre. Aqui, puedes leer que hizo una de los estudiantes. Hoy dormimos hasta las dos. Nos despertamos, y comimos el almuerzo. Comí un huevo, patatas fritas, pollo y pan. La abuela de Cecilia siempre me da más comida de la que puedo comerme, y Ceci siempre esta gritando, '¡Si no quiere, no quiere, abuela!' Después de comer, fuimos a un lago muy grande con Ceci, su hermano y su perro. Anduvimos cerca del lago y saque muchas fotos de los pájaros y peces que estaban allí. Fuimos a casa para coger helados, y después fuimos a un castillo muy antiguo y grande. Caminamos por los jardines, y, otra vez, saque muchas fotos. Cuando volvimos a casa, monté a caballo con Ceci y su hermano. Al principio, solo montamos cerca de casa, pero luego fuimos por las montañas detrás de la casa. La vista era muy bonita. Mi caballo era muy tranquilo, pero el caballo del hermano de Cecilia estaba muy nervioso. Siempre quería correr y salir corriendo. Después de casi una hora, volvimos a casa. -Flannery

Today, the students enjoyed a free day. Here, you can read what one of the students did. Today we slept until two. We ate lunch as soon as we woke up. I had eggs, french fries, chicken and bread; Cecilia's grandma always gives me more food than I can eat. Cecilia is always telling her, 'If she doesn't want it, she doesn't want it!' After lunch, we took a walk around saltwater marshes and a lake. After that, we stopped home to get ice cream, and then drove to a castle. The castle was hundreds of years old, and had a moat, drawbridge and dungeon. We walked through the gardens for a while, and I took a lot of photos. When we returned to the house, I went horseback riding with Cecilia and her brother. At first, we only rode in the turnout, but once I got used to my horse, we rode into the mountains behind the house. The scenery was amazing, and when the path was level, we could trot and canter. The only problem was Alberto's horse was very nervous, and kept trying to gallop and rear. After almost an hour, went back to the house. -Flannery

Dia 7o: O Grove, Lanzada, & San Vicente

Hoy fue un día muy divertido e interesante. Todos los chicos en el intercambio fuimos a la escuela y tomamos el autobús. Fuimos en un barco para dar un paseo marítimo y tomamos muchas fotos. Luego nosotros vimos a unos pescaderos mostrarnos como se cultivan los mejillones y las vieras. Entonces nosotros nos sentamos en unas mesas y disfrutamos de una degustación de mejillones frescos. También visitamos la isla de la Toja done almorzamos en un parque y caminamos a una iglesia pequeñita cubierta de conchas. Después nosotros fuimos a una playa pequeña pero era muy bonita con muchas piedras. Algunas personas jugamos futbol en la calle al lado del mar. Eventualmente, todos regresamos a nuestras casas y fuimos a una fiesta con hogueras para celebrar la fiesta de San Juan. -Matt Press y el restro del grupo de NA

Today was a lot of fun and interesting. All the exchange students from our immersion met up at school and took a school bus to a port. We went on a boat ride and took many pictures. Then we saw some fisherman who showed us how mussels and scallops are cultivated. Afterwards we got to sit down and taste fresh mussels. We also visited the Island of la Toja where we had our lunch and walked to a little church covered in sea shells. After we returned to the mainland, we went to a small beach that was very pretty and had may rocks. Some of us played soccer on an alcove by the sea. Eventually, we all returned to our homes and went to parties with bonfires to celebrate the festival of San Juan. -Matt Press and the rest of the NA group

Dia 6o: La Lonja, Sta Tecla, y Bayona

Ayer, nosotros visitamos la Lonja de Vigo y muchas pescaderias con nuestros hermanos españoles. Fue muy interesante. Nosotros vimos diferentes tipos de pescados, por ejemplo serpientes de agua, cangrejos, y tiburones pequeños. Algunos de nosotros tratamos de poner nuestras manos en la boca de un tiburón, y nuestra profesora, la Maestra McNeily-Anta, nos saco fotos. Después, tomamos un autobús escolar a sitios históricos y populares que estaban encima de montañas. Uno de los lugares fue el Monte Castro de Santa Tecla, un lugar arqueológico de ruinas Celtas. Nuestro grupo paso mucho tiempo caminando por allí y alrededor de las casas redondas, navegando el lugar como exploradores. Entonces, visitamos un mercadillo muy cerca del Castro donde vendían productos muy interesantes y diferentes como una muñeca de una bruja, imanes con diseños Celtas, y joyas tradicionales. Luego, nos dimos un paseo cerca del mar y podíamos ver Portugal que estaba en la otra orilla de un río muy grande. Después, fuimos a tener un picnic en un parque. Cuando terminamos de comer queríamos ir de compras en las tiendas, pero todas estaban cerradas para la siesta. Finalmente, cuando las profesoras regresaron de almorzar, nosotros visitamos una replica de la Pinta, la Carabela que Cristóbal Colon uso cuando descubrió las Américas y que desembarco en Bayona cuando volvió a España al final de su primer viaje al Nuevo Mundo. Sacamos muchas fotos juntos. Afortunadamente, cuando terminamos nuestro tour didáctico las tiendas abrieron y pudimos dar una paseo por ellas! -Chantelle y Will, y todo el resto del grupo de NA

Yesterday, we visited the Port of Vigo and several fisheries with the Spanish siblings. It was very interesting. We saw many different types of fish, including eels, lobsters and even small sharks. Some of us tried to stick our hands in the sharks' mouths, and our teacher, Maestra McNeilly-Anta, took several pictures of us. Afterwards, we took a schoolbus to several popular historical sites, all of which were located on cliffs and mountains. One of the sites was the Monte Castro de Santa Tecla, an archeological site filled with Celtic houses. Our group spent a lot of time walking in and around the circular houses, navigating the site as if it were a maze. Then, we all visited a nearby flea market that had many interesting products, such as laughing witch toys, Celtic magnets and traditional jewelry. Afterwards, we took a long walk along a nearby ocean, and we got a great view of Portugal, which was on the other side of a very large river in Spain, and after a little sightseeing, we went to picnic in a park. When we finished eating, we tried to look in nearby stores, but they were all closed for the siesta. When the teachers returned from lunch, we visited the replica of the Pinta, the Carabela that Christopher Columbus used when he discovered the Americas and that he docked in Bayona when her returned to Spain at the end of his maiden voyage to the New World. We took a lot of pictures together. Fortunately, when we ended our informative tour the shops opened and we were able to look around! -Chantelle and Will, and the rest of the NA group

Dia 5o: La Fiesta del Fin de Curso

Ayer- lunes, 21-6-2010 - nosotros viajamos a CPI do Toural con nuestros companeros. Primero, nosotros comimos dulces en la escuela: chocolates con churros. A cada alumno le dieron una taza para el chocalate y un plato para poner los churros. Estaban para chuparse los dedos! Entonces nosotros hicimos un tour por el CPI Toural con la profesora Beariz Martinez Garcia, una de las profesoras de ingles de la escuela. Luego vimos un programa de presentaciones organizadas por los estudiantes. Algunas de las actuaciones fueron de baile y canto, por ejemplo disfrutamos canciones de Grease, La pantera Rosa, el Rey Leon, y "Thriller" de Michael Jackson. -Christine y Becca, y todo el resto del grupo de NA

Yesterday - Monday, June 21, 2010 - we traveled to CPI do Toural with our host siblings. First, we had a treat from the school: chocolate with churros! Each student was given a cup to fill with chocolate and a plate on which to place the churros. They were delicious and it was a great way to start the morning. Then we took a tour of CPI do Toural with Mrs. Beatriz Martinez Garcia, one of the English teachers at the school. Next on the schedule was a series of performances by the students. Some of the performances included dance numbers from Grease, Pink Panther, the Lion King, and Michael Jackson's "Thriller." -Christine and Becca, and the rest of the NA group

Dias 1o y 2o: Bienvenidos a Pontevedra!

Hola todos! Estamos aquí en Pontevedra, y que gran introducción a la región! El viaje fue muy largo, y no dormimos mucho en el avión. Durante la espera en Madrid, firmamos La Palabra de Honor de Español, y empezamos a hablar en castellano. Al llegar a Vigo, nos pusimos un poco nerviosos al encontrarnos con nuestras familias españolas, pero cuando las vimos en el aeropuerto, habían muchos abrazos y besos. Descansamos, y nos reunimos para comer la cena juntos. Eran nuestras primeras tapas españolas, y estaban deliciosas. Todo fue bien con nuestras familias españolas, y podrías oír el español por todas partes. Hoy, fuimos a las Islas Cies en un barco, y caminamos arriba y arriba y arriba a un faro, donde disfrutamos de unas vistas fantásticas de las montañas, de la playa, y del mar, y desde alli almorzamos. Después, fuimos a la playa (como en la canción de Miranda) y jugamos en el sol y la arena. En el barco a Vigo, hablamos mucho (en español!) aunque estabamos cansados. Nos reunimos con nuestras familias, y ahora nos estamos preparando para pasar el fin de semana con ellas. Hasta la proxima vez, Maestra, Magistra, y todos estudiantes de NA

Hello to all! We are here in Pontevedra, and what a great introduction to the region! The trip was very long, and we didn't sleep much on the plane. While we waited in Madrid, we signed the language pledge, and began to speak Spanish. Once we got to Vigo, we were a little nervous about meeting our Spanish families, but when we saw them in the airport, there was lots of hugging and kissing. We rested, and then came together again for dinner. We had our first Spanish tapas, and they were delicious! Everything went well with our families, and you could hear Spanish at every corner of the table. Today, we went to the Cies Islands in a boat, and walked up and up and up to a lighthouse, where we enjoyed fantastic views of the mountains, of the beach, and of the sea, and where we ate lunch. Afterwards, we went to the beach ("vamos a la playa," like the song by Miranda), and played in the sun and the sand. Returning to Vigo in the boat, we talked a lot (in Spanish!) even though we were all very tired. We met up with our families, and now we're preparing to spend the weekend with them.
